About Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM)
Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) was established in 2009 as a KPK provincial public university, named after Abdul Wali Khan (1917–2006) — the prominent Pashtun nationalist politician, Chairman of the Awami National Party (ANP), and son of the legendary Bacha Khan (Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, the "Frontier Gandhi"). AWKUM is located in Mardan, the second largest city in KPK and the commercial hub of the fertile Peshawar Valley, serving students from Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, and Malakand districts.
AWKUM is a comprehensive multi-faculty university offering programmes in natural sciences, social sciences, computing, pharmacy, law, and management. Since its establishment it has grown rapidly in student enrollment and programme diversity, and is now one of KPK's significant higher education institutions. The university is located near the historic Gandhara ruins at Takht Bhai — one of Pakistan's most significant UNESCO-nominated Buddhist heritage sites — and has an active archaeology and cultural heritage department.
AWKUM also carries the sad distinction of being the site of a devastating terrorist attack on 15 April 2016, when suicide bombers struck the university campus, killing 16 people. Since then, AWKUM has rebuilt and expanded while implementing robust campus security measures, and continues to serve as an important higher education institution for KPK's youth.

AWKUM Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
All AWKUM undergraduate students (BS, Pharm-D, LLB) must maintain a minimum cumulative CGPA of 2.0 throughout their enrolment and at graduation, as mandated by HEC regulations. Students with CGPA between 2.0 and 2.5 are in satisfactory standing, but those aiming for government service, competitive exams (CSS/PMS), or postgraduate study should target 3.0 and above. For MPhil programmes, the minimum CGPA is 2.5, and for PhD coursework, 3.0 is required before advancing to the research and dissertation phase.
Students whose CGPA drops below 2.0 are placed on academic probation for the following semester. During probation, the student must achieve sufficient grades to bring their CGPA back above the threshold. Failure to recover within the probation period may result in dismissal or a requirement to repeat low-grade courses. AWKUM allows course repetition, with the new grade generally replacing the old one in the CGPA calculation per departmental policy.
| Level | Minimum CGPA | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BS / Pharm-D / LLB (Undergraduate) | 2.0 | HEC minimum; target 3.0+ for competitive careers and scholarships |
| MPhil / MS (Postgraduate) | 2.5 | Required throughout and at graduation |
| PhD (Coursework) | 3.0 | Required before advancing to dissertation phase |
AWKUM Dean’s List & Academic Distinctions
AWKUM recognises outstanding academic performance each semester through its Dean’s List. Students who achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or above while enrolled in a full course load receive this distinction, which is recorded on the official academic transcript. For AWKUM students pursuing KPK government careers, HEC scholarships, or competitive graduate admissions, Dean’s List recognition significantly strengthens applications.
At graduation, AWKUM awards degrees With Distinction to students achieving a final cumulative CGPA of 3.5 or above. Programme toppers receive Gold Medals at the annual Convocation ceremony. These distinctions appear on both the degree certificate and the official transcript issued by the AWKUM Registrar, and are recognised by PPSC, FPSC, KPK government departments, and the Pakistan Pharmacy Council for Pharm-D graduates.
AWKUM Campus & Programmes
Faculty of Computing
AWKUM's Department of Computer Science offers BS CS and BS IT programmes. These programmes have become among the most popular at AWKUM as demand for computing education has surged across KPK. AWKUM computing graduates find employment in KPK government IT departments, Peshawar-based software firms, and Pakistan's major IT hubs in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. The curriculum follows HEC's national computing curriculum framework.
Faculty of Natural Sciences
AWKUM's natural sciences departments cover Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, and Environmental Sciences. These departments offer BS programmes and active MPhil and PhD research. The Botany and Zoology departments conduct research on KPK's biodiversity — including medicinal plants from Swat, Dir, and Malakand forests — and the Environmental Sciences department focuses on Peshawar Valley air and water quality.
Pharmacy, Economics, Management and Law
AWKUM's Department of Pharmacy offers Pharm-D (5-year Doctor of Pharmacy), producing graduates for pharmaceutical companies and hospital pharmacies across KPK and Pakistan. The Department of Economics and Management Sciences offers BS Economics and BBA programmes, and the Department of Law offers LLB (5-year integrated). Law graduates from AWKUM enrol in the KPK Bar Council and serve as advocates in Mardan, Peshawar, and district courts across KPK.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at AWKUM
AWKUM follows absolute grading as prescribed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for all public universities in Pakistan. Every grade boundary is fixed on the standard 4.0 scale — there is no bell-curve adjustment, class normalisation, or relative scaling based on the performance of other students in the cohort. A score of 85% always maps to the same GPA points regardless of whether it is the highest or the lowest mark in the class.
This means your CGPA at AWKUM is a direct reflection of your own performance, not of your cohort. Transfer students from bell-curve institutions (such as some private universities) should note that their GPAs are not directly comparable with AWKUM GPAs. When applying for HEC scholarships, PPSC/FPSC government posts, or graduate admissions abroad, absolute CGPA on the HEC 4.0 scale is the internationally recognised standard and requires no conversion coefficient.
How to Check Your GPA on the AWKUM Portal
AWKUM students access their official academic records through the university’s student portal at awkum.edu.pk. After logging in with your university-issued student ID and password, navigate to the Academic Records or Results section to view your semester-wise GPA, cumulative CGPA, and grade breakdowns for each course. The portal is the authoritative source for grades — any discrepancy between the portal and unofficial result announcements should be reported to your department’s Exam Coordinator within the official rechecking window.
Official transcripts and mark sheets can be requested through the AWKUM Examination Section. Students requiring an attestation of their degree or transcript by HEC should first obtain the document from AWKUM’s Registrar and then submit it to HEC’s online attestation portal. Always cross-check the GPA shown on the portal against your own calculations using this calculator to catch any data-entry errors before the rechecking deadline passes.
AWKUM Admission Aggregate & Merit Calculator
AWKUM admissions follow the KPK public university standard aggregate formula. For most BS programmes, the merit is calculated as: Entry Test / NTS NAT (50%) + Matric / O-Level (25%) + FSc / A-Level (25%). Pharm-D and LLB programmes may have slightly adjusted weightings determined each year by the AWKUM Admissions Committee; always check the official admission policy published on awkum.edu.pk for the current cycle.
A strong aggregate score improves your chances of securing a seat in competitive programmes such as BS CS, BBA, and Pharm-D. Note that the aggregate formula is separate from your CGPA — once enrolled, your academic standing at AWKUM is determined entirely by your coursework performance on the HEC 4.0 scale, not by your admission aggregate. Use this page’s GPA and CGPA calculators to stay on top of your academic progress throughout your degree.
| Component | Weight | Example Score | Weighted Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry Test (NTS NAT / AWKUM Test) | 50% | 75 / 100 | 37.5 |
| Matric / O-Level | 25% | 88% | 22.0 |
| FSc / A-Level | 25% | 82% | 20.5 |
| Total Aggregate | 100% | — | 80.0% |
