About National College of Arts

National College of Arts (NCA) is one of the oldest and most prestigious art and design institutions in South Asia, located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Founded in 1875 during British rule as the Mayo School of Arts, it was renamed the National College of Arts at independence. NCA is an HEC-chartered public university under the federal government's Ministry of National Heritage & Culture.

NCA offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Fine Arts, Architecture, Design, Art History, Film & Television, and Music — making it Pakistan's premier institution for creative arts education. It has produced generations of Pakistan's leading artists, architects, filmmakers, and designers, with alumni holding prominent positions nationally and internationally.

The main campus in Lahore is a historic building spread across multiple blocks, with studios, galleries, design labs, and a renowned art library. NCA also has a campus in Rawalpindi. All programmes follow the standard HEC 4.0 grading scale.

NCA Grading Scale (Official 10-Grade System)

NCA follows the standard HEC 4.0 ten-grade scale, uniform across all HEC-chartered universities in Pakistan:

GradeGrade PointsPercentageDescription
A+ / A4.0085–100%Excellent / Outstanding
A-3.6780–84%Very Good
B+3.3375–79%Good
B3.0070–74%Above Average
B-2.6765–69%Average
C+2.3360–64%Below Average
C2.0055–59%Satisfactory
C-1.6750–54%Pass
D1.0045–49%Minimum Pass
F0.00Below 45%Fail

Studio courses at NCA involve portfolio and project-based assessment alongside written examinations. Grades in studio subjects reflect both technical skill and creative merit as evaluated by faculty juries.

How to Calculate Your NCA GPA

Your NCA semester GPA is a weighted average of grade points across all enrolled courses:

  1. Find the grade points for each course (e.g., A = 4.00, B+ = 3.33).
  2. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get Quality Points.
  3. Add all Quality Points together.
  4. Divide by total credit hours enrolled that semester.

Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)

Example: Painting Studio (4 cr, A = 4.00) + Art History (3 cr, B+ = 3.33) + Design Theory (2 cr, A- = 3.67): Quality Points = 16.00 + 9.99 + 7.34 = 33.33. Total Credits = 9. GPA = 33.33 ÷ 9 = 3.70.

How to Calculate Your NCA CGPA

Your NCA Cumulative GPA (CGPA) tracks your academic performance across all completed semesters:

CGPA Formula: CGPA = Total Quality Points (All Semesters) ÷ Total Credit Hours Completed

To use the CGPA tab above, enter each semester's GPA and total credit hours. The calculator applies the weighted formula automatically to produce your cumulative CGPA.

Note: NCA calculates CGPA at the end of each semester. For repeated courses or jury re-assessments, check with your department head on the grade replacement policy.

Convert NCA CGPA to Percentage

For scholarship applications or employment forms requiring a percentage, use the HEC-approved formula:

Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100

Absolute vs Relative Grading at NCA

NCA uses absolute grading for written and theory courses, where fixed percentage ranges correspond to fixed letter grades. Studio and project-based courses are assessed through jury evaluations:

Course TypeGrading MethodImplication for Students
Theory / WrittenAbsolute grading (fixed % thresholds)Your grade depends only on your own marks
Studio / ProjectFaculty jury evaluation (rubric-based)Creative merit and technical skill are assessed holistically

At NCA, studio courses (painting, design, architecture studio) are assessed by a panel of faculty members during jury presentations at semester end. The jury system is a core part of NCA's creative education model and encourages peer learning through public critiques.
