NUST undergraduate merit is 75% NUST Entry Test (NET) + 15% HSSC (FSc) + 10% SSC (Matric), as published in NUST's merit generation criteria. In numbers: Merit = (NET ÷ 200 × 75) + (FSc % × 0.15) + (Matric % × 0.10). The same weightage applies to every programme. What changes is which NET paper you sit.

Enter marks and totals exactly as printed on your result cards. Board marks sheets differ, so check your own totals. Your result is an estimate, not an official NUST merit.
What NET score do you need?
Set your target merit and we work backwards from your Matric and FSc marks to the NET score you need. The grid shows your merit at every score from 50% to 100% of the paper.
NUST Merit Formula 2027 (75-15-10 NET Aggregate)
NUST ranks undergraduate applicants with one aggregate built from three parts. The weightage below comes from the general merit generation criteria published on NUST's admissions website.
| Component | Weightage | Marks used |
|---|---|---|
| NUST Entry Test (NET) | 75% | NET score converted to a percentage |
| HSSC (Part-I) / HSSC / A-Level equivalent / DAE | 15% | Percentage of total marks |
| SSC / O-Level / equivalent | 10% | Percentage of total marks |
The same 75-15-10 weightage applies to engineering, computing, applied sciences, architecture, and business and social sciences. What differs by programme is the NET paper you sit, which we list further down. Some calculators still show an old 10 / 40 / 50 split. That is not the NUST formula and will give you the wrong merit.
How to Calculate NUST Aggregate: Step-by-Step Guide
- Convert each result to a percentage. Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
- Multiply by the weightage. NET percentage × 0.75, FSc percentage × 0.15, Matric percentage × 0.10.
- Add the three numbers. The total is your merit out of 100.
Worked example
A student scores 160/200 in the NET, 490/550 in FSc Part-I and 950/1100 in Matric.
| Component | Marks | Percentage | Weightage | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NET | 160 / 200 | 80.00% | 75% | 60.00 |
| FSc Part-I | 490 / 550 | 89.09% | 15% | 13.36 |
| Matric | 950 / 1100 | 86.36% | 10% | 8.64 |
| Total merit | — | — | 100% | 82.00% |
Try these same numbers in the calculator above and you will get 82.00%.
NUST FSc Part-I vs Full HSSC: Which Marks Count?
NUST's merit table lists the FSc component as “HSSC (Part-1) / HSSC”. FA and FSc candidates can apply for the NET on the basis of Part-I, and confirmation of admission is subject to providing the FSc certificate or detailed marks certificate with the required group, subjects and percentage.
In practice, enter your Part-I marks if your Part-II result is not out yet, and enter your full HSSC result if you already have it. The calculator defaults to Part-I with a total of 550. Tap Full FSc (1100) to switch. The percentage is what counts, but do not mix the two: Part-I marks entered against a total of 1100 will understate your merit.
NUST NET Series 2027: Attempts & Best Score Rule
You can sit the NET more than once. NUST's policy is that during a series you can take the test only once for a particular discipline, and that in case of multiple attempts the best NET score is used for merit generation. Your NET result stays valid for the current admission cycle only.
If you have already taken more than one series, open “Took NET more than once?” under the calculator, enter each score, and it picks your best automatically.
Tentative NET 2027 schedule published by NUST
| Series | Online registration | Test centres |
|---|---|---|
| Series 1 | 4 Oct to 14 Nov 2026 | Islamabad |
| Series 2 | Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 | Islamabad, Quetta, Karachi |
| Series 3 | Feb to Mar 2027 | Islamabad |
| Series 4 | Apr to May 2027 | Islamabad, Quetta, Karachi, Gilgit |
Each series needs its own online registration form. The test is computer-based at Islamabad and Quetta and paper-based at Karachi and Gilgit. NUST marks this schedule as tentative, so confirm the dates on its Dates to Remember page before you register.
NUST NET Test Papers & Section-Wise Weightage
NUST sets different NET papers depending on your academic background and the programme you apply for. All of them are compiled from the textbooks prescribed for HSSC courses, so your board syllabus is the right place to start.
| NET paper | Sections and weightage | For programmes |
|---|---|---|
| NET-Engineering | Mathematics 50%, Physics 30%, English 20% | Engineering and computing programmes. Also BS Robotics & Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Food Science & Technology. |
| NET-Applied Sciences | Biology 50%, Chemistry 30%, English 20% | Pre-Medical candidates applying to BS Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Food Science & Technology, Bioinformatics, Chemistry and Physics. |
| NET-Business Studies & Social Sciences | Quantitative Mathematics 50%, English 50% | BBA, Public Administration, Mass Communication, Economics, Psychology, Accounting & Finance, LLB, Tourism & Hospitality, Liberal Arts & Humanities, International Relations. |
| NET-Architecture | Design Aptitude 50%, Mathematics 30%, English 20% | B Architecture and B Industrial Design only. |
| NET-Natural Sciences | Mathematics 50%, English 50% | BS Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry only, for applicants whose background is outside the standard streams. |
Which academic background fits which programme?
| Programme group | Academic background | NET paper |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical or ICS | NET-Engineering |
| Computing | Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, ICS, or HSSC with Mathematics as a mandatory subject | NET-Engineering |
| Applied Sciences (Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Agriculture) | Pre-Medical | NET-Applied Sciences |
| B Architecture / B Industrial Design | Mathematics and Physics as mandatory subjects | NET-Architecture |
| Business Studies & Social Sciences | Any HSSC subject combination | NET-Business Studies & Social Sciences |
Pre-Medical students who apply for engineering programmes without taking an additional mathematics exam must clear a condensed eight-week mathematics course offered by NUST before admission.
NUST Merit Impact: How Much Is Each Mark Worth?
The weights are lopsided on purpose. This table shows what a small improvement is worth in merit points.
| Improvement | Change in merit |
|---|---|
| +1 mark in the NET (out of 200) | +0.375 points |
| +10 marks in the NET | +3.75 points |
| +10 marks in FSc Part-I (out of 550) | +0.27 points |
| +10 marks in Matric (out of 1100) | +0.09 points |
Ten extra NET marks are worth about fourteen times more than ten extra FSc Part-I marks. If you are choosing where to spend your last weeks before a NET series, this is your answer.
NUST Eligibility Criteria 2027 (Minimum Marks)
Merit only matters once you are eligible. These are the conditions NUST publishes for undergraduate admission.
- A minimum of 60% aggregate marks each in SSC and HSSC, or equivalent exams as per IBCC equivalence.
- FA and FSc candidates can apply on the basis of Part-I. Admission is confirmed against the FSc certificate or detailed marks certificate with the required group, subjects and percentage.
- O and A-Level candidates can apply on the basis of their IBCC O-Level equivalence certificate. Confirmation is subject to the IBCC A-Level equivalence certificate with the required subjects and percentage.
- SSC and HSSC (or equivalent) must be complete, with the required subjects and percentage, before classes start. Candidates sitting a second annual board exam, or the October or November O and A-Level session, are not eligible for the current session.
Subject requirements depend on the programme, as shown in the table above. Rules can change between cycles, so confirm them on NUST's eligibility page before you pay any fee.
NUST Merit for O-Level and A-Level Students
Candidates with O and A-Levels or another foreign qualification apply on the basis of their IBCC equivalence certificates. NUST asks these candidates to enter marks exactly as shown on the IBCC equivalence certificate, and warns against self-calculated marks because they can affect your merit position and lead to cancellation of admission later.
If you are in your final A-Level year and your result is not out, NUST assigns 25% weightage to your O-Level equivalence marks and the rest to the NET. Choose “A-Level final year” in the programme selector above to see that version of the calculation.
NUST Admission via ACT or SAT: How It Works
Besides the NET, NUST offers limited seats on the basis of ACT or SAT scores. For national seats the merit uses the same weightage with your ACT or SAT score in place of the NET: 75% ACT/SAT, 15% HSSC and 10% SSC. For international seats the ACT or SAT score carries 100%. ACT and SAT merit lists are prepared separately from the NET list.
- Admission is sought either on the NET or on ACT/SAT. Other tests, such as MDCAT, are not an admission route.
- The tentative 2027 schedule opens ACT/SAT applications from 4 May to 25 July 2027, and scores must reach NUST by 25 July 2027.
- ACT and SAT scores are valid for two years. Candidates who do not enter their scores by the deadline are assigned zero weighting.
Pick “ACT / SAT basis” in the programme selector above to calculate your merit for this route.
NUST Closing Merit: What Aggregate Do You Need?
There is no single number. Closing merit depends on the programme, the year, the campus and how strong that year's NET scores were. Computing and electrical engineering at the main Islamabad campus are usually the most competitive, and other programmes and campuses close lower.
NUST publishes the closing merit of the previous session for each programme on its website. Treat that as your target, use the required-score tool above to see what NET score gets you there, and aim a few points higher to leave room for a tougher year.
Merit lists for NET and ACT/SAT seats are generated tentatively by the last week of July. After the list is out you get one or two days to edit your programme preferences, and you check your merit position and selection status on the NUST admissions portal with your registration number.
How to Improve Your NUST Merit Score
- Put the NET first. It is 75% of your merit, and it is the only part you can still change quickly.
- Prepare from your HSSC textbooks. NUST compiles the NET from the textbooks prescribed for HSSC courses, and it publishes instructions and a sample test on its website.
- Practise under time. The NET is computer-based at Islamabad and Quetta. Train with the same section mix and time limit as your paper.
- Use more than one series. Since your best score counts, an early attempt is a free practice run. Remember you can sit each discipline only once per series.
- Be careful with coaching claims. NUST says it does not run or sponsor NET preparation activities, and advises candidates to avoid organisations claiming any association with NUST.
- Choose programme preferences honestly. NUST advises picking only programmes you would accept, to avoid unnecessary fee payments and complications.
- Keep a backup. Apply to other universities in parallel so a difficult NET day does not cost you the whole year.
Common NUST Aggregate Calculation Mistakes to Avoid
- Using Part-I marks with a total of 1100. Part-I is usually out of 550. Use the total that matches the marks you are entering.
- Averaging the three percentages. The NET is weighted 75%, so a simple average gives a wrong answer.
- Forgetting the NET total. A score of 150 out of 200 is 75%, not 150%.
- Using an old formula. Calculators that show 10 / 40 / 50 for NUST are out of date.
- Ignoring your best series. If you sat more than one NET, enter the highest score.
- Entering self-calculated O and A-Level marks. Use the marks on your IBCC equivalence certificate.
- Treating the estimate as final. Only the NUST merit list is official.
Frequently asked questions
What is the NUST merit formula?
NUST undergraduate merit is 75% NUST Entry Test (NET), 15% HSSC (FSc) and 10% SSC (Matric), as published in NUST's merit generation criteria. In numbers: (NET / 200 x 75) + (FSc % x 0.15) + (Matric % x 0.10).
How is the NUST aggregate calculated?
Convert your NET score, FSc marks and Matric marks to percentages, multiply them by 0.75, 0.15 and 0.10 and add the results. For example, NET 160/200, FSc Part-I 490/550 and Matric 950/1100 give 60.00 + 13.36 + 8.64 = 82.00%.
How many marks is the NUST Entry Test out of?
The NET score is widely reported out of 200, and this calculator uses 200 by default. NUST's policy pages do not state the total, so if your NET result shows a different total, change it in the calculator.
Does NUST use FSc Part-I or full HSSC marks?
NUST's merit table lists "HSSC (Part-1) / HSSC". FA and FSc candidates can apply for the NET on the basis of Part-I, and admission is confirmed against the FSc certificate with the required group, subjects and percentage. Enter Part-I marks if Part-II is not out, and your full HSSC result if you have it.
How many times can I take the NET and which score is counted?
You can sit the NET more than once, but only once per discipline during a series. In case of multiple attempts NUST uses your best score for merit generation. A NET result is valid for the current admission cycle only.
How many NET series are there?
NUST's tentative NET 2027 schedule lists four series. Online registration opens on 4 October 2026 for Series 1, then December 2026 to January 2027 for Series 2, February to March 2027 for Series 3 and April to May 2027 for Series 4. Each series needs its own registration form.
What is the minimum eligibility for NUST?
NUST requires a minimum of 60% aggregate marks each in SSC and HSSC, or equivalent exams as per IBCC equivalence. Subject requirements depend on the programme, so confirm them on the NUST eligibility page.
Is the same formula used for every NUST programme?
Yes. NUST publishes one general merit criteria of 75% NET, 15% HSSC and 10% SSC, and it applies to engineering, computing, applied sciences, architecture, and business and social sciences. What differs is the NET paper you sit.
Which NET paper should I take?
It depends on your background and programme. NET-Engineering (Mathematics 50%, Physics 30%, English 20%) is for engineering and computing. NET-Applied Sciences is for Pre-Medical applicants to biosciences programmes. NET-Business Studies and Social Sciences (Quantitative Mathematics 50%, English 50%) covers BBA and social sciences. NET-Architecture is for B Architecture and B Industrial Design.
How much does the NET matter compared with FSc and Matric?
A great deal. Ten extra NET marks add 3.75 points to your merit, while ten extra marks in FSc Part-I (out of 550) add about 0.27 points and ten extra Matric marks (out of 1100) add about 0.09 points.
What NET score do I need to reach a target merit?
Subtract your Matric and FSc points from your target, divide by 0.75 and multiply by 200 / 100. For example, with Matric 950/1100 and FSc Part-I 490/550 you already have 22.00 points, so a target of 80% needs a NET score of at least 155/200. Use the required-score tool on this page to do it for your own marks.
I am in my final A-Level year. How is my merit calculated?
NUST assigns 25% weightage to the IBCC O-Level equivalence marks of candidates who are in their final A-Level year, with the rest on the NET. Enter the marks from your IBCC equivalence certificate, not self-calculated marks.
Can I apply with ACT or SAT instead of the NET?
Yes, for limited seats. National seats use 75% ACT/SAT, 15% HSSC and 10% SSC. International seats use the ACT or SAT score alone. ACT/SAT merit lists are prepared separately from the NET list.
Can I use MDCAT for NUST admission?
No. NUST admission is sought either through the NET or through ACT/SAT scores. MDCAT is not an admission route for NUST undergraduate programmes.
What merit do I need to get into NUST?
It depends on the programme, year and campus, and there is no single number. NUST publishes the closing merit of the previous session for guidance. Use it as your target, then use the required-score tool to see the NET score you need.
When is the NUST merit list announced?
NUST generates the merit lists for NET and ACT/SAT seats tentatively by the last week of July. You can search your merit position and selection status on the NUST admissions portal using your registration number.
Is this the official NUST merit?
No. This is an independent estimator. Your official merit position is published by NUST on its undergraduate admissions portal.
Why is my merit different from the one NUST published?
Common reasons are using the wrong totals, entering Part-I marks against a full-FSc total, not using your best NET series, self-calculated O and A-Level marks, or rounding. Recheck your totals and compare again.
