About AIOU — Allama Iqbal Open University

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in 1974 as the first open university in Asia and the third in the world. Named after Pakistan's national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal, AIOU is headquartered in Islamabad and holds the distinction of being the second largest university in the world by student enrollment, with over 1.3 million registered students enrolled in programmes ranging from matriculation to PhD. AIOU is a federal public university supervised by HEC and delivers fully distance-education programmes through a nationwide network of regional campuses, study centres, and tutors spread across all provinces and territories of Pakistan.

AIOU's mission is to provide affordable, accessible higher education to students who cannot attend conventional universities due to work, family, geography, or financial constraints. Its study centres operate in remote districts, merged tribal areas, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, making it the primary higher education pathway for millions of working adults, teachers, housewives, military personnel, and students in areas without nearby university campuses.

AIOU offers programmes from Matric (Secondary) to PhD level. At the higher education level, its most popular programmes are BEd, MEd, BA, BS, MA, MSc, and MBA. The BEd and MEd programmes are particularly large — tens of thousands of in-service government school teachers pursue these qualifications every semester for career promotion and professional development.

Assessment Breakdown

Total Marks = Assignments / TMAs (30%) + Final Examination (70%)

AIOU uses a unique dual assessment model. Each course has Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) contributing 30% of the final marks, and a final written examination contributing 70%. Students must pass both components separately — passing only one is not sufficient to pass the course. The combined weighted score is mapped to the HEC 4.0 grading scale to determine the letter grade and grade points.

AIOU Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation

Undergraduate Requirements

All AIOU undergraduate students (BA, BS, BEd) must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain enrolled and to graduate. Students must also pass both the assignment component (30%) and the final examination (70%) of each course separately — failing either component results in an F grade for that course regardless of the combined score.

Graduate Requirements

AIOU postgraduate students (MA, MSc, MEd, MBA) must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5. MPhil students must achieve at least a CGPA of 3.0 in their coursework component before advancing to the thesis or research project stage. PhD coursework similarly requires a minimum of 3.0.

Academic Probation

Students whose CGPA falls below the required minimum are placed on academic warning and given one semester to recover. AIOU's distance-learning model provides flexibility — students can re-appear in failed courses in the subsequent semester without losing their enrolled status in other courses. Repeated failure to meet the minimum CGPA can result in dismissal from the programme.

AIOU Dean's Honours List & Distinctions

AIOU recognises outstanding academic achievement through its Vice Chancellor's Honours Roll, awarded to students who achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or above with a full course load and no failing grades. This recognition is noted on the official transcript and is a valued credential for government service, private sector employment, and further postgraduate admissions.

At graduation, AIOU awards academic distinctions based on final cumulative CGPA. Students graduating with a CGPA of 3.5 or above receive their degree With Distinction. Gold medals are awarded at AIOU's annual convocation to programme toppers — an important recognition given AIOU's massive student population across Pakistan.

AIOU Campus & Programmes

Main Campus — Islamabad

AIOU's main campus is located in Islamabad (Sector H-8) and houses the university's central administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, Faculty of Arabic & Islamic Studies, and the Institute of Educational Technology. The Islamabad campus is where MPhil and PhD students attend face-to-face research supervision and workshops. It also hosts AIOU's central examination coordination centre and the national printing facility for study materials.

Undergraduate Programmes

AIOU undergraduate programmes include: BEd (Bachelor of Education), BS Computer Science, BS Economics, BS Mathematics, BS English, BS Urdu, BS Islamic Studies, BS Library Information Science, BS Pakistan Studies, and the traditional BA programme. All are delivered by distance learning with students studying at home and appearing at local examination centres.

Postgraduate Programmes

AIOU postgraduate programmes include: MEd (Master of Education), MA Education, MA Urdu, MA English, MA Islamic Studies, MA Pakistan Studies, MSc Mathematics, MSc Statistics, MBA (Finance, Marketing, HRM, Banking), MPhil, and PhD in multiple disciplines. The MBA and MS programmes are available for working professionals through distance education with periodic workshops.

Absolute vs Relative Grading at AIOU

AIOU uses absolute grading based on fixed percentage thresholds as mandated by HEC Pakistan. Grades are assigned based on a student's own performance against published cutoffs — not relative to classmates. In a distance-learning context, this is particularly important because students across thousands of examination centres nationwide are assessed on the same standard.

Your grade at AIOU depends on your combined score from Tutor-Marked Assignments (30%) and the final examination (70%) mapped against the fixed thresholds. If you score 85% or above on the combined weighted score, you earn an A grade (4.00) regardless of whether other students at your examination centre performed well or poorly.

How to Check Your GPA on the AIOU Portal
