About KMU (Khyber Medical University)
Khyber Medical University (KMU) is a public sector university established in 2007 in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. KMU is the premier medical and health sciences university in KPK, recognised by both the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC). The university was established to serve as a comprehensive academic umbrella for health sciences education across KPK, affiliating medical colleges, nursing schools, and allied health institutions across the province.
KMU's main campus is in Peshawar and the university coordinates health sciences education across a network of constituent and affiliated institutions in KPK. It offers MBBS, BDS, Pharm-D, BS Nursing, and various BS and MS programmes in allied health sciences. All KMU semester-based programmes follow the HEC 4.0 absolute grading scale.
PMC Note: MBBS and BDS students must additionally meet Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) clinical competency and licensing requirements. Maintaining HEC GPA standards alone does not guarantee PMC clinical progression — both regulatory frameworks apply simultaneously.

How to Calculate Your KMU GPA
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Worked Example — Pharm-D Semester 2
| Subject | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmaceutics II | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Pharmacology I | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Pharmaceutical Chemistry | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Anatomy & Physiology | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Biochemistry | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Total | 15 | — | — | 54.00 |
GPA = 54.00 ÷ 15 = 3.60 — A strong semester result for a KMU Pharm-D student, well above the minimum and qualifying for the Dean's List.
How to Calculate Your KMU CGPA
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Three-Semester Worked Example
| Semester | Semester GPA | Credit Hours | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 3.50 | 15 | 52.50 |
| Semester 2 | 3.60 | 15 | 54.00 |
| Semester 3 | 3.45 | 15 | 51.75 |
| Total | — | 45 | 158.25 |
CGPA = 158.25 ÷ 45 = 3.52 — An excellent cumulative result for a KMU student, well above the minimum and competitive for HEC postgraduate scholarships.
Convert KMU CGPA to Percentage
Percentage = CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100
| CGPA | Percentage Equivalent | Standing |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00 | 100% | Outstanding |
| 3.67 | 91.75% | Excellent |
| 3.50 | 87.5% | Distinction |
| 3.00 | 75% | First Division |
| 2.50 | 62.5% | Second Division |
| 2.00 | 50% | Minimum Pass |
KMU Minimum CGPA Requirements & Probation
KMU undergraduate students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.0 on the HEC 4.0 scale to remain in good academic standing. Postgraduate (MS/MPhil) students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.5. MBBS and BDS students must additionally meet all PMC professional examination requirements — GPA alone does not guarantee clinical progression.
| Programme | Minimum CGPA | Additional Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS / BDS | 2.0 | PMC professional exams required |
| Pharm-D / BS Health Sciences | 2.0 | HEC standard |
| Postgraduate (MS / MPhil) | 2.5 | HEC standard |

KMU Campus & Programmes
Main Campus — Peshawar
KMU's main campus is located in Peshawar, the provincial capital of KPK. The campus includes administrative, academic, and research facilities serving the university's central functions. KMU functions as a coordinating body for health sciences education across KPK, with its constituent and affiliated colleges spread throughout the province.
Health Sciences Programmes
MBBS and BDS are KMU's flagship clinical programmes, delivered through PMC-recognised constituent medical and dental colleges across KPK. Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D) is a 5-year programme combining pharmaceutical sciences with clinical pharmacy. BS Nursing and various BS Allied Health Sciences programmes (Medical Lab Technology, Physiotherapy, Radiology) prepare graduates for KPK's healthcare system.
Postgraduate Programmes
KMU offers MS and MPhil programmes in health sciences disciplines including Public Health, Epidemiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Pharmacology, preparing graduates for research and academic careers in health sciences.
Absolute vs Relative Grading at KMU
KMU follows absolute grading for all its semester-based programmes, as mandated by HEC Pakistan. Each grade corresponds to a fixed percentage threshold — scoring 85% or above always earns an A (4.00 grade points), regardless of class performance. There is no normalisation or curve adjustment.
For MBBS and BDS students, PMC professional examinations use their own separate pass/fail and grading criteria, which run parallel to — but independently of — the HEC semester GPA system.
How to Check Your GPA on the KMU Portal
