PIEAS Merit & Aggregate Calculator

Use this free PIEAS (Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences) merit and aggregate calculator to calculate your BS admission aggregate. Enter your Matric, HSSC Part-I marks and PIEAS Test percentile, then see the percentile you need for your target merit.

Quick answer

PIEAS’s own official Information Leaflet confirms the formula for SSC/HSSC-stream applicants is 15% Matric + 25% HSSC Part-I + 60% PIEAS Written Test. The critical detail: the test component is your percentile score, not raw marks or a percentage of marks obtained. O-Level/A-Level applicants use a combined 40% O-Level equivalence + 60% Test instead.

What PIEAS Test Percentile score do you need?

Set your target merit and we work backwards from your Matric and FSc marks to the PIEAS Test Percentile score you need. The grid shows your merit at every score from 50% to 100% of the paper.

PIEAS Merit Formula 2027: 15% Matric + 25% HSSC + 60% Test Percentile

PIEAS’s own official Information Leaflet for BS Admissions states the selection distribution directly:

ComponentWeightage
PIEAS Written Test (Percentile Score)60%
HSSC Part-I25%
Matric / SSC15%

For O-Level/A-Level applicants, Academic Performance is a single combined figure instead: O-Level/A-Level 40%, using the IBCC O-Level equivalence, plus the same 60% PIEAS Test weight.

The single most important detail in this formula: the 60% test component is your percentile score, as reported by PIEAS on your own result, not your raw marks out of the 100-question paper and not a straightforward percentage.

How to Calculate Your PIEAS Aggregate: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Convert Matric and HSSC Part-I to percentages. Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
  2. Use your PIEAS Test percentile as-is. It is already on a 0-100 scale; do not recalculate it from raw marks.
  3. Multiply by the weightage. Matric × 0.15, HSSC Part-I × 0.25, Test percentile × 0.60.
  4. Add the three numbers. The total is your merit out of 100.

Worked example

A student scores 950/1100 in Matric, 490/550 in HSSC Part-I, and has a PIEAS Test percentile of 92.

ComponentMarks / ScorePercentageWeightagePoints
PIEAS TestPercentile 9292.00%60%55.20
HSSC Part-I490 / 55089.09%25%22.27
Matric950 / 110086.36%15%12.95
Total merit——100%90.43%

Try these same numbers in the calculator above and you will get 90.43%.

PIEAS Written Test: Pattern and Why It Uses a Percentile

The PIEAS Written Test is confirmed as a 100-question MCQ paper, 3 hours (180 minutes) long, with no negative marking. Your raw score is then converted into a percentile before it enters the merit formula, which is why your result card shows a percentile, not a mark out of 100.

You sit one of four paper variants depending on your HSSC stream:

StreamSections (100 questions total)
Pre-EngineeringEnglish 10, Mathematics 30, Physics 30, Chemistry 30
Pre-Medical (with additional Maths paper)English 10, Mathematics (SSC level) 30, Physics 30, Chemistry 30
ICS (Maths, Physics, Computer Science)English 10, Mathematics 30, Physics 30, Computer Science 30
Science General with MathematicsEnglish 10, Mathematics 60, Physics 30

A separate route exists for SAT-II or ACT scores, open to all Pakistani nationals regardless of stream, mainly to accommodate overseas Pakistanis. A minimum combined SAT-II score of 2000 across three subjects, or an ACT composite of 25, is required, and this route produces its own separate merit list rather than feeding into the 15/25/60 or 40/60 formula.

PIEAS Eligibility Criteria 2027 (Minimum Marks)

PIEAS applies one uniform minimum across all six BS programmes, confirmed directly from its own Information Leaflet:

  • At least 60% marks in both Matriculation/O-Level and Intermediate/A-Level (HSSC Part I/II) or equivalent.
  • Engineering programmes require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (Pre-Engineering) or Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science (ICS) as major subjects.
  • BS Computer & Information Sciences and BS Physics also accept a Pre-Medical background (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and BS Computer & Information Sciences additionally accepts Science General with Mathematics.
  • Pre-Medical candidates who sat an additional Mathematics paper are also eligible for Engineering programmes.
  • DAE (Diploma of Associate Engineer) holders are eligible for Engineering programmes, per Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) policy.
  • Result-awaiting candidates may apply, but must hold a final result of at least 60% by the time they join.

Anyone with less than 60% in SSC or HSSC Part-I/II (or the O/A-Level equivalent), or who failed or did not appear in any HSSC subject, is explicitly ineligible.

PIEAS Merit Impact: How Much Is Each Point Worth?

Because the test is already a percentile on a 0-100 scale and carries 60% weight, a single percentile point moves your merit far more than a raw mark in Matric or HSSC.

ImprovementChange in merit
+1 percentile point in the PIEAS Test+0.60 points
+10 marks in HSSC Part-I (out of 550)+0.455 points
+10 marks in Matric (out of 1100)+0.136 points

One extra percentile point is worth more than four times as much as ten extra HSSC Part-I marks. Since percentile is relative to how everyone else performed, this also means your test-day performance relative to other applicants matters more than any absolute score target.

PIEAS Closing Merit: What Aggregate Do You Need?

There is no single number: closing merit depends on the programme and that year’s applicant pool. BS Computer and Information Sciences and BS Electrical Engineering are typically PIEAS’s most competitive programmes.

Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as your target, then use the required-score tool above to see the test percentile you need to reach it.

How to Improve Your PIEAS Merit Score

  • Prioritise the PIEAS Written Test above everything else. At 60% weightage on a percentile scale, it is by far the biggest lever in your aggregate.
  • Practise the paper for your exact HSSC stream. Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, ICS and Science General each have a different subject split.
  • Remember percentile is relative. A strong raw score in an easy year can convert to a lower percentile than the same score in a harder year, so aim to maximise your raw score regardless.
  • Consider the SAT-II/ACT route if it applies to you. It produces a separate merit list and may suit some applicants better than the written test route.
  • Check your eligibility subjects carefully. The required HSSC subject combination differs by programme.
  • Apply broadly. Consider more than one university so a single test day does not decide your whole year.

Common PIEAS Aggregate Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering raw test marks instead of your percentile. PIEAS’s formula uses the percentile score specifically, not marks out of 100.
  • Averaging the three components. The test is weighted 60%, so a simple average gives the wrong answer.
  • Using the SSC/HSSC formula for an O-Level/A-Level applicant, or vice versa. The two routes use genuinely different academic weightings (15/25 split vs a combined 40%).
  • Assuming NTS NAT is accepted at PIEAS. Only the PIEAS Written Test, SAT-II or ACT are accepted routes — NAT is not listed as an alternative.
  • Assuming a reserved seat or quota applies. PIEAS explicitly states there is no reserved seat or quota for any category of applicant.
  • Treating the estimate as final. Only PIEAS’s own merit list is official.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PIEAS merit formula?

For SSC/HSSC-stream applicants: 15% Matric, 25% HSSC Part-I and 60% PIEAS Written Test, confirmed directly from PIEAS’s own Information Leaflet. For O-Level/A-Level applicants: a combined 40% O-Level equivalence plus the same 60% test weight.

Why does PIEAS use a percentile instead of raw test marks?

PIEAS’s own leaflet explicitly labels the 60% component as a "Percentile Score." This ranks your performance relative to other test-takers rather than using your raw score out of 100 questions directly.

How is the PIEAS aggregate calculated?

Convert Matric and HSSC Part-I to percentages, take your PIEAS Test percentile as-is, and apply the 0.15/0.25/0.60 weightage. For example, Matric 950/1100, HSSC Part-I 490/550 and a test percentile of 92 give 90.43%.

What is the PIEAS Written Test pattern?

100 MCQs (four options each), 3 hours (180 minutes), with no negative marking. The subject split depends on your HSSC stream: Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, ICS, or Science General with Mathematics.

Can I use SAT-II or ACT scores for PIEAS admission?

Yes, on a separate route with its own merit list, open to all Pakistani nationals. Minimum combined SAT-II score across three subjects is 2000, or a minimum ACT composite of 25.

What is the minimum eligibility for PIEAS?

At least 60% in both Matriculation/O-Level and Intermediate/A-Level (HSSC Part I/II), uniformly across all six BS programmes. Required subjects vary by programme.

Are there reserved seats or a quota at PIEAS?

No. PIEAS explicitly states there is no reserved seat or quota for any category of applicant, aside from an HEC policy allowance for qualifying Balochistan/erstwhile-FATA applicants (with no fee waiver).

What PIEAS Test percentile do I need to reach a target merit?

Subtract your Matric and HSSC Part-I points from your target and divide by 0.60. For example, with Matric 950/1100 and HSSC Part-I 490/550 you already have 35.23 points, so a target of 88% needs a test percentile of at least 87.95. Use the required-score tool on this page to do it for your own marks.

Which BS programmes does PIEAS offer?

Chemical Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy & Materials Engineering, and Physics.

What merit do I need to get into PIEAS?

It depends on the programme and applicant pool that year, so there is no fixed number. Use the previous cycle’s official closing merit for your programme as a target.

Is this the official PIEAS merit?

No. This is an independent estimator built directly from PIEAS’s own published Information Leaflet. Your official merit position is published by PIEAS on its own admissions portal.

Why is my merit different from the one PIEAS published?

Common reasons are entering raw test marks instead of your percentile, using the wrong stream’s formula (SSC/HSSC vs O/A-Level), using HSSC Part-II instead of Part-I marks, or rounding. Confirm the exact figures with PIEAS’s admissions office.
