Most Punjab University BS (4-Year) programmes use Academic Record 75% + Entry Test 25%, where Academic Record blends your Matric marks at only one-quarter weight with your full Intermediate marks. Engineering and technical institutes typically use 67% Academic Record + 33% Entry Test instead, based on Intermediate marks alone. Both are confirmed in PU's own Admission Regulations Book.

Punjab University's real merit formula
PU's own 170-page Admission Regulations Book sets out the formula in detail.
General BS (4-Year) programmes — most faculties
PU's official weightage for standard BS 4-year admission is Academic Record 75% + Entry Test 25%. What makes PU different is how “Academic Record” itself is built. It is not simply your FSc percentage. It is a blended ratio:
Your Matric result is folded in at only one-quarter weight relative to your Intermediate marks, inside this single ratio, before the 75% weighting is applied. This is different from treating Matric and FSc as two separate, independently-weighted percentages, which is how most other Pakistani universities build their formula.
Engineering and technical institutes
PU's engineering-linked institutes, such as the Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology, use a different, simpler split: Academic Record 67% (your Intermediate percentage directly, no Matric blend) + Entry Test 33%.
| Route | Academic Record weight | Entry Test weight | Academic Record basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| General BS (4-Year) | 75% | 25% | Quarter-Matric blend with Intermediate |
| Engineering / technical institutes | 67% | 33% | Intermediate percentage only |
| No entry test required | 100% | 0% | Depends on department |
This calculator is built directly from PU's own Admission Regulations Book.
PU does not have one university-wide formula
This is worth stating plainly: unlike some universities that publish a single central formula, Punjab University's Admission Regulations Book lays out admission criteria separately for each Faculty, College, Department and Institute. The two routes above cover the great majority of BS applicants, but they are not universal.
If your department is not clearly a “general BS” or an engineering/technical institute, use the “No entry test required” option only if you have confirmed that with your department, and otherwise treat the General BS route as your starting estimate while you check your department's specific criteria table in the Admission Regulations Book.
How to calculate your PU aggregate step by step
- Divide your Matric marks by 4. Do the same to the Matric total.
- Add your full Intermediate marks (and totals) to those quarter-Matric figures. This gives you a combined obtained figure and a combined total.
- Add any bonus marks (20 for Hafiz-e-Quran) to the combined obtained figure only.
- Divide and multiply by 100 to get your Academic Record percentage.
- Subtract 2 marks per late year (maximum 5 years) if applicable.
- Multiply by 75% (or 67%), and multiply your Entry Test percentage by 25% (or 33%).
- Add the two results. The total is your merit out of 100.
Worked example: General BS route
A student scores 950/1100 in Matric, 980/1100 in Intermediate and 70/100 in the Entry Test, with no Hafiz-e-Quran bonus and no gap years.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter-Matric | 950 ÷ 4 | 237.50 |
| Quarter-Matric total | 1100 ÷ 4 | 275.00 |
| Academic Record % | (237.50 + 980) ÷ (275 + 1100) × 100 | 88.55% |
| Academic Record points | 88.55% × 75% | 66.41 |
| Entry Test points | 70% × 25% | 17.50 |
| Total merit | — | 83.91% |
Try these same numbers in the calculator above and you will get 83.91%.
Worked example: Engineering route
With the same Intermediate (980/1100) and Entry Test (70/100) marks, but using the 67/33 engineering route, which does not use Matric at all:
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Record % | 980 ÷ 1100 × 100 | 89.09% |
| Academic Record points | 89.09% × 67% | 59.69 |
| Entry Test points | 70% × 33% | 23.10 |
| Total merit | — | 82.79% |
Hafiz-e-Quran bonus and gap-year deduction
Both are confirmed in PU's Admission Regulations Book, and apply on top of the base formula.
Hafiz-e-Quran: +20 marks
Certified Hafiz-e-Quran candidates receive 20 additional marks, added to the Academic Record numerator before it is converted to a percentage. You must produce a certificate from a recognised institution, and the Departmental Admission Committee interviews the candidate to confirm it.
Gap years: −2 marks per late year
If you are applying more than one session after completing your Intermediate, 2 marks are deducted from your Academic Record percentage for each late year, up to a maximum of 5 years. You must also submit an affidavit confirming you did not gain admission elsewhere in that period.
Use the Hafiz-e-Quran checkbox and the “Late years” field in the calculator above to include both automatically.
How much does each mark move your merit?
Because Matric only enters the formula at one-quarter weight inside the Academic Record ratio, it has by far the smallest effect of the three inputs.
| Improvement | Change in merit (General BS route) |
|---|---|
| +10 marks in the Entry Test (out of 100) | +2.50 points |
| +10 marks in Intermediate (out of 1100) | +0.55 points |
| +10 marks in Matric (out of 1100) | +0.14 points |
An Entry Test mark is worth roughly 18 times more than a Matric mark under this formula, and about 4.5 times more than an Intermediate mark. If you are deciding where to focus, the Entry Test is almost always the better use of remaining time, with Intermediate a distant second and Matric barely moving the number at all.
PU eligibility: entry test categories and minimums
PU accepts several entry test categories depending on your intended programme, and also accepts some other universities' tests:
- PU's own entry tests, such as PU-E (Engineering-linked), PU-M, PU-CS, PU-A&H, PU-SP, PU-COM and PU-GS, depending on your stream.
- For some engineering-linked programmes, ECAT (UET Lahore) or the NUST Entry Test may also be accepted, subject to the department's specific policy and PEC requirements.
- A minimum entry test score generally applies for eligibility, and this can differ by test and by department.
- Foreign applicants, Children of Overseas Pakistanis, and several other reserved-seat categories are generally exempted from the entry test requirement.
Confirm the exact test and minimum score for your specific programme in the current Admission Regulations Book or on the PU admissions portal, since this varies by department.
What merit do you need for Punjab University?
There is no single number: closing merit depends on the department, the programme and the applicant pool that year. Highly sought programmes such as Computer Science close far higher than less competitive departments.
Use your department's previous-cycle closing merit, published in PU's own merit records, as your target, then use the required-score tool above to see the Entry Test score you need to reach it.
How to improve your PU merit
- Prioritise the Entry Test. Under both the General BS and Engineering routes, it moves your merit far more per mark than Matric or even Intermediate.
- Do not expect Matric to rescue a weak Academic Record. At only one-quarter weight inside the ratio, a strong Matric result cannot offset a weak Intermediate result.
- Claim your Hafiz-e-Quran bonus if eligible. It is a straightforward +20 marks with the right certificate and interview.
- Apply on time. The 2-marks-per-late-year deduction adds up quickly if you delay your application across multiple sessions.
- Confirm your exact department's formula. PU does not use one formula for everything, so check before you rely on either preset in this calculator.
- Keep a backup. Apply to more than one university so a single test day does not decide your whole year.
Common mistakes when calculating PU aggregate
- Treating Matric and FSc as separately weighted percentages. PU blends them into one ratio with Matric at one-quarter weight, which is not the same as giving Matric its own fixed percentage.
- Using a generic 10/40/50 or flat 25/50/25 formula. Neither matches PU's own Admission Regulations Book.
- Forgetting the gap-year deduction. Late applicants lose 2 marks per year, up to 5 years, from the Academic Record percentage.
- Assuming every department uses the same formula. Engineering and technical institutes commonly use 67/33, not 75/25.
- Treating the estimate as final. Only PU's own merit list is official.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Punjab University merit formula?
Most General BS (4-Year) programmes use Academic Record 75% + Entry Test 25%, where Academic Record blends Matric marks at one-quarter weight with full Intermediate marks in a single ratio. Engineering and technical institutes typically use 67% Academic Record (Intermediate percentage only) + 33% Entry Test. This is confirmed directly from PU's own Admission Regulations Book.
Why does PU only count Matric at one-quarter weight?
This is how PU's own Admission Regulations Book defines the Academic Record ratio for General BS programmes: (Matric obtained / 4 + Intermediate obtained + bonus) divided by (Matric total / 4 + Intermediate total). It is a deliberate design choice by the university, not an approximation, and it means Matric has much less influence on your merit than Intermediate does.
How is the PU aggregate calculated?
Work out your Academic Record percentage using the quarter-Matric ratio (or the plain Intermediate percentage for the engineering route), add any bonus marks, subtract any gap-year penalty, then apply the weightage and add your Entry Test contribution. For example, Matric 950/1100, Intermediate 980/1100 and Entry Test 70/100 give an Academic Record of 88.55%, worth 66.41 points at 75%, plus 17.50 points from the Entry Test, for a total of 83.91%.
Do all PU departments use the same formula?
No. PU's Admission Regulations Book lays out criteria separately by Faculty, College, Department and Institute. The General BS and Engineering routes in this calculator cover most applicants, but some departments have their own specific policy.
What is the Hafiz-e-Quran bonus at PU?
Certified Hafiz-e-Quran candidates receive 20 additional marks, added to the Academic Record numerator before converting to a percentage. You need a certificate from a recognised institution and an interview with the Departmental Admission Committee.
How does the gap-year deduction work?
Two marks are deducted from your Academic Record percentage for each year late after completing Intermediate, up to a maximum of 5 years. You also need to submit an affidavit that you did not gain admission elsewhere during that period.
Which entry test does PU accept?
PU runs its own tests by stream, including PU-E, PU-M, PU-CS, PU-A&H, PU-SP, PU-COM and PU-GS. Some engineering-linked programmes may also accept ECAT or the NUST Entry Test depending on the department and PEC requirements.
What Entry Test score do I need to reach a target merit?
Subtract your Academic Record points (Academic Record % multiplied by its weight) from your target, then divide by the Entry Test weight. Use the required-score tool on this page to do this for your own marks and chosen route.
What merit do I need to get into PU?
It depends on the department and the applicant pool that year, so there is no fixed number. Use your department's previous-cycle closing merit as a target, then use the required-score tool to see the Entry Test score you need.
Is this the official PU merit?
No. This is an independent estimator built from PU's own published Admission Regulations Book. Your official merit position is published by Punjab University on its own merit lists.
Why is my merit different from the one PU published?
Common reasons are using the wrong route for your department, forgetting the gap-year deduction or Hafiz-e-Quran bonus, using the wrong Entry Test total, or a department-specific rule not covered by the General BS or Engineering presets. Check your department's exact criteria in the Admission Regulations Book.
