Quick answer

Every PUCIT (FCIT) programme uses Punjab University’s formula: Academic Record 75% + PU Entry Test 25%. Academic Record blends one-quarter of your Matric marks with your full Intermediate marks in a single ratio. Hafiz-e-Quran applicants get 20 extra marks, and 2 marks come off for each late year.

PUCIT Merit Formula: Academic Record 75% + Entry Test 25%

PUCIT is now Punjab University’s Faculty of Computing & Information Technology (FCIT). Every FCIT programme in PU’s Admission Regulations Book uses PU’s basic criteria:

Academic Record % = [ (Matric obtained ÷ 4) + Intermediate obtained + Hafiz marks ] ÷ [ (Matric total ÷ 4) + Intermediate total ] × 100
Merit = Academic Record % × 75% + Entry Test % × 25%

Matric is not a separate component. Only a quarter of your Matric marks goes into the Academic Record ratio, next to your full Intermediate marks, so on 1100-mark papers Matric makes up one-fifth of the Academic Record and Intermediate four-fifths.

If your Intermediate Part-II result is not out when you apply, PU uses your Part-I marks and Part-I total (normally out of 550) instead. PU’s own online merit calculator uses exactly this formula.

How to Calculate Your PUCIT Aggregate: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Divide your Matric marks and Matric total by 4.
  2. Add your Intermediate marks to the quarter-Matric marks, and your Intermediate total to the quarter-Matric total. Add 20 to the marks if you are Hafiz-e-Quran.
  3. Divide and multiply by 100 to get your Academic Record percentage. Subtract 2 for each late year.
  4. Multiply by 75%, then add your Entry Test percentage × 25%.

Worked example: Part-II result awaited

A student scores 950/1100 in Matric, 480/550 in Intermediate Part-I and 70/100 in the PU Entry Test.

StepCalculationResult
Quarter-Matric950 ÷ 4 and 1100 ÷ 4237.50 / 275
Academic Record %(237.50 + 480) ÷ (275 + 550) × 10086.97%
Academic points86.97% × 75%65.23
Entry Test points70% × 25%17.50
Total merit—82.73%

Enter the same numbers in the calculator above (Intermediate total 550) and you will get 82.73%. As a Hafiz-e-Quran, the same student’s Academic Record becomes (717.50 + 20) ÷ 825 = 89.39%, and the merit 84.55%.

Worked example: full Intermediate result

With 950/1100 in Matric, 980/1100 in Intermediate and 70/100 in the test, the Academic Record is (237.50 + 980) ÷ 1375 = 88.55%, worth 66.41 points, plus 17.50 from the test: 83.91%.

PUCIT (FCIT) Programmes and Seats

FCIT runs its programmes at PU’s Old Campus and New Campus in Lahore. Merit seats listed in PU’s Admission Regulations Book:

ProgrammeOld CampusNew Campus
BS Computer ScienceMorning 40, Self-Supporting 50Morning 40
BS Computer Science (Software Engineering)Regular 40, Self-Supporting 50Regular 40
BS Computer Science (Information Technology)Morning 42, Self-Supporting 50Morning 42
BS Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence)Morning 40, Self-Supporting 50Self-Supporting 50
BS Artificial IntelligenceMorning 40—
BS Data Science—Morning 40, Self-Supporting 50
BS Cyber Security—Self-Supporting 50

Morning and Self-Supporting seats use the same formula but have separate merit lists. Self-Supporting fees are higher, and those lists usually close lower than Morning.

Hafiz-e-Quran Marks and Late-Year Deduction

Hafiz-e-Quran: +20 marks

Hafiz-e-Quran applicants get 20 extra marks in the Academic Record numerator. You need a certificate from a well-established institution, and the departmental admission committee interviews you to confirm it. With 1100-mark papers, this adds about 1.1 points to your merit.

Late years: −2 marks each

If you apply one or more sessions after passing Intermediate, PU deducts 2 marks from your Academic Record percentage for each late year, up to five years. Each late year lowers your merit by 1.5 points. You must also submit an affidavit that you did not take admission anywhere else in between.

PUCIT Eligibility Criteria and Entry Test

ProgrammeMinimum eligibility
BS Computer Science, BS CS (Software Engineering), BS CS (Artificial Intelligence)50% in HSSC or A-Level (IBCC) with Mathematics. Students without Mathematics must pass 6 credits of Mathematics deficiency courses in the first year.
BS CS (Information Technology), BS Artificial Intelligence, BS Data Science, BS Cyber Security50% in ICS, FSc Pre-Engineering, Maths & Physics, Maths & Computer Science, Maths & Statistics, or FSc Pre-Medical (with or without additional Maths); 60% in a relevant DAE; 50% in A-Level (IBCC)

You must be 24 or younger to apply for a BS programme at PU. The PU Pre-Admission Entry Test is mandatory for merit and reserved seats. It is not required for reserved-seat applicants from Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Sindh, Balochistan and Ex-FATA, children of overseas Pakistanis, foreign applicants, and visually impaired applicants.

Seats are split into 91% open merit for all of Punjab, 3% for AJK, FATA and Balochistan, 3% for Sindh, KPK and Islamabad, and 3% for children of PU teachers and employees.

PUCIT Merit Impact: How Much Is Each Mark Worth?

With 1100-mark Matric and Intermediate papers and a 100-mark test:

ImprovementChange in merit
+1 mark in the PU Entry Test (out of 100)+0.25 points
+10 marks in Intermediate (out of 1100)+0.55 points
+10 marks in Matric (out of 1100)+0.14 points
Hafiz-e-Quran (+20 marks)+1.09 points

Unlike most computing admissions, the entry test carries only 25% at PUCIT. Your Intermediate result decides most of your merit, and ten extra Intermediate marks are worth about as much as two extra test marks.

PUCIT Closing Merit: What Merit Do You Need?

Each FCIT programme has separate merit lists for each campus and shift (Morning, Regular, Self-Supporting). BS Computer Science and Software Engineering Morning seats are usually among the most competitive at Punjab University. Self-Supporting lists and newer programmes usually close lower.

Compare your score with the most recent official merit list for your programme, campus and shift, then use the required-score tool above to see the entry test score you need.

How to Improve Your PUCIT Merit

  • Maximise your Intermediate marks. They carry the largest share of your merit.
  • Still prepare well for the entry test. It is compulsory, and each mark is worth 0.25 points.
  • Apply in the year you pass Intermediate. Every late year costs 1.5 points of merit.
  • Apply to Morning and Self-Supporting shifts on both campuses. Each has its own merit list.
  • Claim Hafiz-e-Quran marks if eligible. Bring your certificate for the departmental interview.

Common PUCIT Merit Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Weighting Matric as a separate percentage. PU folds a quarter of your Matric marks into the Academic Record ratio. It is not a fixed 10% or 25% slice.
  • Giving the entry test 50%. At PUCIT the test carries 25%.
  • Using full Intermediate totals with Part-I marks. If you apply on Part-I, divide by the Part-I total.
  • Forgetting the late-year deduction. Two marks per late year come off your Academic Record percentage.
  • Treating the estimate as final. Only the official FCIT merit lists are authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Equivalence and recognition

How this page was checked. The formula, Hafiz-e-Quran marks, late-year deduction, age limit, entry test rules, eligibility, programmes and seats come from the University of the Punjab’s own Admission Regulations Book (Section XIX, Faculty of Computing & Information Technology, and Annexure-II), which cites Admission Committee meetings from 2026. We also read the JavaScript of PU’s own online Basic Criteria Merit Calculator, which computes the same quarter-Matric, 75/25 formula. Of the other calculator pages checked, one matched this formula exactly. Others showed a generic 10/40/50 split or a Matric/Intermediate-only estimate with no test, neither of which matches PU’s documents.
